Joseph Burt papers, 1856-1876 (bulk 1862-1863).

Papers include correspondence of Burt while he was stationed in New Orleans in 1863. Some letters contain descriptions of military life, activities of the regiment, the arrival of Confederate prisoners of war in New Orleans, and off-duty recreation including the shooting of alligators. Included are receipts for military equipment and supplies, a circular from New Bedford, Massachusetts, regarding payment of volunteers, and notes for a "camp lecture" on morality, the duties of a soldier, and the Union cause.
